Giordano Middle East is on course with its expansion plans for 2006 with new stores opened in Russia, Bulgaria, Armenia and Algeria this year.
“Giordano’s success in the Middle East has prompted us to expand into other markets that are already familiar with the brand due to their proximity to the region. Today our operations in new markets contribute significantly to our total revenue and we expect this to grow by at least 20 % within the next two years. We also plan to enter Syria by the third quarter of 2006 and Egypt, Ukraine and Azherbaijan by the end of this year, “said Ishwar Chugani, Executive Director for Giordano Middle East.
“Centralised management and logistics from Dubai has helped us to ensure uniformity in branding, merchandise and quality. We make sure that customers get the best service, no matter which Giordano shop they go to. “
Giordano’s new store in Russia is located in Novasibirsk and is spread over an area of over 1000 square feet. The company has also opened 4 stores in Bulgaria, 3 stores in Armenia and 1 in Algeria.
Iran contributes substantially to Giordano Middle East’s business from other markets with its 15 stores, closely followed by Tsibilisi in Georgia, which now has 10 stores including a new flagship store of more than 2000 sq.feet. The company also has 3 stores in Jordan and 1 store in Kazakhstan.
“In most of our new markets, there already existed a strong awareness of the Giordano brand because of frequent travels to the Middle East and our presence in the duty free markets. So our main challenge in these markets was to find partners who believed in the brand and were committed to delivering, “Chugani commented.
Giordano invests heavily in selection and training of franchisees to ensure quality in every aspect of retailing. Potential franchisee requests are evaluated on the basis of retail experience, management skills and financial capability to run the business.
Once selected the franchisees are given training in visual merchandising, customer service and brand communication to ensure uniformity in quality and service.

Peter Lau, Chairman of Giordano International was in Dubai recently, to meet with the regional management board for Giordano in the Middle East, as they reviewed plans for the expansion of the brand. The meeting reviewed Giordano’s current development plans for the region.
Giordano now operates 118 stores in the region, with 29 new stores under development, 15 of which are scheduled to open before the end of 2006. As part if the joint venture partnership with ETA Group, Giordano International has also expanded into new markets such as India, Iran, Georgia-Tsiblisi, Bulgaria, Armenia and Kazakhstan. The brand has experienced double digit growth year-on-year, since starting operations in the region in 1993.
Speaking of Giordano’s success in the region, Peter Lau said: “Our growth in the region is dependent on the development of new retail and lifestyle centres. The mall-centric attitude of the region means that shoppers prefer all their brands in one place; particularly in the Gulf. Even though there is massive investment in the retail sector across the Middle East, there are a number of major developments we are moving into, it will still be some time before we are able to take possession.”
Lau continued: “Our partnership with the ETA Group has seen our brand grow tremendously in just over a decade, and has been instrumental in our entering the Indian marketplace. Giordano now reaches more than three billion people, and we haven’t even looked to the Americas or Europe yet. This is quite an achievement. ETA’s local expertise and strong relationships has allowed the Giordano brand to become an intricate part of our customers lives, and has allowed the brand to serve consumers more effectively with each new store.”
Whilst in Dubai, Lau met with Eisa Al Ghurair, Director for the ETA-ASCON Group, Syed Salahuddin, Managing Director, ETA-ASCON Group, Ahmed Salahudddin, Director at ETA, Mr. Nagarajan, ETA’s Director of Corporate Affairs and Ishwar Chugani, Executive Director of Giordano Middle East. The meetings reviewed current strategy and future plans for the brand, both in terms of satisfying increased consumer demand and infrastructure to support the increased inventory and distribution throughout the Giordano Middle East network.
